BE YOURSELF: A KILLER IDEA
BE YOURSELF: A KILLER IDEA
Every created being has his or her own peculiarities
which places the person either ahead or behind others. It can be better said
that humans being are customised and configured to given particular feature
that makes him outstandingly different from the closest like of him. It makes
him special and a wonderful creature of the First cause
This peculiarity that differentiates every human is
particularly that which spies the life in which we all partake. These peculiarities
can be viewed in the light of personal differences which is a culminative
quality of both physical qualities and personality of a said individual. Personality
can be viewed in the sense of behaviours and comportment of the said individual.
Physical qualities also in the sense of
body size shape and colour. These things make us and tell about us, they
function like an operating system that creates a platform for other things to
take place.
The idea of being oneself is one which has become a
heightened idea among the contemporary people of today with particular
reference to the youths. As a youth, this idea can be seen in the light of
maintaining and being that which differentiates us from others. It is being and
acting according to that which we are naturally inclined towards. In being oneself
there is no room for hiding even a bit of our character, which is showing our
true self at all times. By inference it thereby forms a firewall against the
incoming of an alien self (that is not acting according to what is not you). It
is better understood as being authentic to one’s life and calling.
Socrates in his wisdom encouraged men to identify who
truly they are but the question is after this discovery what next? The truth of
being oneself entails self discovery which deserves some accolades because it
is a light shown in the right direction. Another question goes thus, will that
light that is being shown be a light towards self development or a light to encourage
stagnation. A touch or a discussion with the contemporary youths of today on
why they had to perform in the way they do will result to the answer “this is
me”.
Is being me enough for a safe and progressive society?
As earlier highlighted it is evident that we all are of different characters
and inclined toward a particular way of life. Some of which is morally right
and some of which are not. Will someone who is kleptomania insist in stealing
because that is him? Will one who has a high level of sexual instinct go on “sexing”
because that is him? Of course not because he might try his mama one day. Being
me is today one of the hinges on which the deprogressives Nigeria is held. Remember
that where your freedom ends another’s start. Being me could also entail our
animalistic nature.
True enough trying to be oneself to the individual is
worth it and borrowing a leaf from Kant they try to place it on a universal
principle. A typical example is the gay brothers who wish everybody becomes
gay. A look at the lives of the biblical Solomon, Samson, Judas Iscariot and
the rest of them will tell you where being oneself landed them. What of our
fanatic Muslim brothers, Bobrisky and our fighting senators who try to be
themselves are doing, how good are their actions to us?
Man is always in a state of becoming says the
philosopher. King David discovered his sexual instinct and made amends. Moses
discovered himself and looked for a helper. Bill Gate discovered himself and
left school for something higher. It is only a fool that discovers himself and
remains like that. We should strive to make ourselves better and conform to the
good societal standards. Kierkegaard calls it authentic existence.
Being who you are is not enough. Discovering who you
are and chiselling out a better you are wonderful. Discovering your weakness
and sticking to that is suicidal. However, this does not entail faking oneself.
Take steps and pain to become a better you, if our ancestors remained
themselves we would have been better of animals. What I am communicating is
this, “discover yourself and become a
better version of yourself, don’t be just yourself.”
